HOUSE OF COMMONS - NORTHERN IRELAND AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Select Committees are appointed for the duration of a parliament and need to be re-appointed after the general election.
On the 13 July 2005 the House of Commons appointed thirteen MP's to the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee. On Monday 16 October 2006 Gordon Banks MP and Meg Hillier MP were discharged from the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee. John Battle MP and Mr Denis Murphy MP were added to the Committee on the same date.
The Committee is appointed under Standing Order No. 152 of the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Northern Ireland Office and associated public bodies. It has the power to send for persons, papers and records.

Remit
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine:
- Expenditure, administration and policy of the Northern Ireland Office;
- Administration and expenditure of the Crown Solicitor's Office (but excluding individual cases and advice given by the Crown Solicitor);
- Other matters within the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
*Excluding the expenditure, administration and policy of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Northern Ireland and the drafting of legislation by the Office of the Legislative Counsel

Select Committee Powers
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee is one of the departmental select committees, the powers of which are set out in House of Commons Standing Orders, principally in SO No. 152.
The principal powers of Select Committee are:
1. To send for persons, papers and records;
2. To adjourn from place to place (i.e. to meet away from Westminster);
3. To appoint Specialist Advisers.
In practice, the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee prefers to operate by consent, inviting the submission of written memoranda and / or witnesses to appear before it.
