MARTINA ANDERSON MLA (SF) Martina Anderson MLA


Martina Anderson is from the Bogside area of Derry.  She spent over 13 years in prisons in England and Ireland and was released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. Martina served as the party's All Ireland Political Co-ordinator and is former Sinn Féin Director of unionist Engagement. Martina was elected as an MLA for the Foyle constituency in the 2007 Assembly Election after which she was appointed as Party Spokesperson on Equality and Human Rights. Martina sits on the Policing Board. She is also a member of the OFMDFM Committee in the Assembly.


MARY BRADLEY MLA (SDLP)
Mary Bradley MLA

Mary Bradley lives in Carnhill, and is married to Liam with one daughter. She worked as a carer in the Mental Health section of the Western Health and Social Services for 18 years, prior to being elected to Derry City Council, representing the Greater Shantallow area in 1985.  Mary served as the city’s Deputy Mayor (1990-91) and as its Mayor (1991-92). Bradley was first  elected to the Assembly in November 2003 for the Foyle constituency and successfully won re-election in 2007, but by just 98 votes from party colleague Helen Quigley.  She resigned from the Western Education and Library Board in March 2005 as an act of protest against the proposed cuts in the Education system, but was reappointed shortly afterwards. Mary is also a member of the Derry Port & Harbour Commission, and a Party Spokesperson on the Elderly and Children's issues in OFMDFM. Mary is a member of the Education Committee in the Assembly.


MARK DURKAN MP MLA (SDLP)
Mark Durkan MLA

Mark Durkan was born in Derry in 1960. He was educated at St Patrick's Primary School and St Columb's College in the city. He is married to Jackie with one daughter. He studied politics at Queen's University, Belfast and went on to do a part-time BA course in Public Policy Management at the University of Ulster (Magee).  He was a Derry City councillor (1993-2000) and then became an MLA in 1998.  He was unopposed in elections to the party leadership in autumn 2001 and was elected Deputy First Minister on 6th November 2001, after a spell as Finance Minister between 1999 and 2001.  In May 2005 he was elected MP for Foyle, formerly John Hume's seat.  In 2007 he was successfully re-elected to the Assembly on the first count. Mark is Chair of the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee in the Assembly.

WILLIAM HAY MLA (DUP)
William Hay MLA

William Hay was born in Donegal in 1950.  Educated at Faughan Valley High School in Londonderry, he is a former haulage contractor. He is divorced and has three daughters and two sons.  He is a member of Derry City Council.  He served on the Employment and Learning Committee and the Regional Development Committee in the 1998-2003 Assembly.  Hay was a member of the Policing Board from 2001 - 2007. In 2007 he topped the poll in the Assembly Election for his constituency of Foyle. Hay is Speaker of the Assembly and Chair of the Business Committee.


RAYMOND McCARTNEY MLA (SF)
Raymond McCartney MLA

Raymond McCartney was interned in the early 1970's and received two life sentences for the murders of RUC officer Patrick McNulty and of Du Pont director Jeff Agate in 1977. He spent 17 years in prison and in 2006 had his conviction quashed. In 1980, McCartney participated in the first hunger strike that ended after 53 days. Later he was OC (Officer Commander) of republican prisoners in the Maze. He has been active since his release with ex-prisoners' groups Tar Abhaile and Coiste na n-Íarchimí.  McCartney was the first Sinn Féin member to have his own voice heard on television following the lifting of the ‘broadcasting ban’ in 1994 while in 2002 he was the first member of the Provisional IRA to give evidence to the Bloody Sunday inquiry. Raymond replaced Mary Nelis as Sinn Féin MLA for Foyle in May 2004 when she resigned. He is Sinn Féin Party Spokesperson on Regional Development.  Raymond was  comfortably re-elected in the Assembly Election of 2007. Raymond is Deputy Chair of the Assembly and Executive Review Committee and a member of the Regional Development Committee and Committee on Procedures in the Assembly. In March 2008, McCartney replaced his party colleague Paul Maskey on the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee.


Pat Ramsey MLA PAT RAMSEY MLA (SDLP)

Pat Ramsey was first elected to Derry City Council in 1985 and was Mayor from 1999 - 2000. He was the Director of Elections and Campaign Manager for John Hume in his Assembly, Westminster and European Elections. He is the Chair and Leader of the SDLP Group of Councillors in Derry City Council as well as SDLP party spokesperson on Culture, Arts and Leisure.  In 2007 he was forced out of his home in Derry’s Bogside area by dissident republicans who repeatedly attacked his home.  The attacks allegedly intensified after the SDLP signed up to policing and participated in local District Policing Partnerships.  Pat was successfully re-elected in the 2007 Assembly Election increasing his share of first preference votes. Pat is a member of the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee and the Audit Committee in the Assembly. He is Party Spokesperson on Culture, Arts and Leisure issues.
